A great champion of the Mille Miglia has passed away: Luciano Viaro

The news, as sad as it is shocking, leaves us breathless and dampens our eyes in a continuous asking of questions that have no answer. Suddenly, Luciano Viaro, three times winner of the Mille Miglia historic revival, who triumphed in regularity races in every corner of the globe, from Asia to South America, was found dead yesterday morning in San Dorligo della Valle, just a few kilometers from Trieste. The owner of a company making chronometric systems, Luciano had two great passions: cars and guns. And it was precisely at the wheel of classic cars that he became such an excellent player in races which challenge the cars that have written automobile history. Appreciated not just for his many successes, but because he was a man of great character, extroverted, helpful, ready to say what he thought with extreme frankness, becoming in every case, a point of reference for the whole environment, in Italy as well as abroad. But "his" race - the one that he cared the most about - for prestige and for international resonance, was the Mille Miglia. He would prepare for the race with almost maniacal care. He wanted to win it, always. He managed to do so three times (in 2005, 2007, and 2008) driving that jewel of mechanics, an Alfa Romeo from the thirties. Though he came in second in the last race, Viaro next May would have been racing once again, in a 1933 Alfa Romeo Gran Sport 1500, once more in the exclusive club of those favored to win. Unfortunately this will not be so, because destiny has decided otherwise. Luciano has left us his memory - that can never be erased, his smile, his enthusiasm. Let the earth be light for him. The President and the Organizing Committee of the Mille Miglia embrace with affection Luciano's son, Antonio, and the rest of the family.
