FIAT-CHRYSLER BOSS WANTS ALFA-BADGED DODGES
The Alfa Romeo Avenger could be on the cards if Sergio Marchionne gets his way
Coming soon to an Alfa dealer near you
Fiat and Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne has said that European-market Dodges could be rebadged as Alfa Romeos as part of Fiat's plans for the Chrysler group. Marchionne apparently envisages the two brands as sharing a common identity. "Dodge is the American muscle car, while Alfa Romeo is the European muscle car," he says. "How we dovetail these two brands is very important."
The plan, which would see Alfas sold as Dodges in the US and all Dodges rebranded as Alfas in Europe, will no doubt resurrect the memory of the horror that was the Alfa Romeo Arna (see PH Zeroes) - a car that had all the looks of a Nissan cherry, along with reliability of an early eighties Alfa...
While this could be getting a Ram's head badge
Are we set for an Alfa Romeo Avenger, then? The prospect doesn't exactly get the team here at PH Towers salivating - Alfas might not be the last word in dynamic sophistication, but they have the heart and soul to more than make up for that. A Dodge Avenger, on the other hand, possesses neither the spirit expected of an Alfa nor the dynamic genius that the Italian brand could do with. Marchionne is also confident about the future of Chrysler - which emerged from bankruptcy protection last month. "We are still burning cash, but it's slowed down by far," he says. "The question is how quickly we can stop the bleeding."
