The Alfa Romeo 159, quite possibly one of the finest looking cars on European roads is to be made domestically in China via a tie up between Nanjing autos and Chinas rising auto star, Chery automobiles.
This news may come as a shock to some CCT readers - it came as a shock to us too. Chery making the Alfa? Can they pull off this amazing feat? We have talked about the possibilities of a Chery Nanjing tie up before quite recently, however, we believed it to be rumor and speculation.
From 2009 onwards, Chery and Nanjing autos plan to be making 30,000 to 35,000 Alfas per year. We believe the plan is for some to be sold in China to aim at the growing luxury market, and the rest to be sent back to Europe.
There is no word on domestic pricing as of yet, but we believe it will almost certainly be cheaper than the imported prices of Alfas.
